Shower Tile Installation

A shower is one of the most demanding tile applications in your home. Water, steam, and daily use put constant stress on every surface. When installed correctly, a tiled shower will last decades. When done wrong, you won’t see the damage until it’s behind your walls. At Davie Mac Tile, we build showers the right way — with proper waterproofing, solid substrate preparation, and precise tile setting.
Why Shower Tile Installation Requires a Specialist
Not every tile installer understands what it takes to build a shower that lasts. Showers demand more than just setting tile — they require a complete waterproof system that protects your home from moisture damage.
When a shower is installed incorrectly, problems develop slowly and invisibly. Water seeps through grout, penetrates behind tiles, and saturates the wall cavity. By the time you notice soft spots, mold, or water stains on the ceiling below, the damage is already extensive.
Common signs of a poorly installed shower:
- Grout cracking or falling out within the first year
- Tiles becoming loose or hollow-sounding
- Musty smell that won’t go away
- Water stains appearing on adjacent walls or ceilings
- Mold growing in corners or along the floor
These problems aren’t cosmetic — they indicate water is going where it shouldn’t. The fix usually means tearing everything out and starting over.
How We Install Showers
Every shower we build follows a proven process. No shortcuts, no guessing.
Assessment and planning — We evaluate your space, discuss your design goals, and identify any structural concerns. This includes checking walls for plumb, floors for level, and backing material for adequacy.
Waterproofing system installation — This is the most critical step. We install manufacturer-approved waterproofing systems that create a continuous barrier against moisture. Every surface that can get wet gets waterproofed — walls, floor, curb, corners, niches, benches, and around all penetrations like valve bodies and showerheads.

Substrate preparation — Tile needs a flat, stable surface. We correct any irregularities so tiles lay flat without lippage. This prep work is invisible in the finished shower but essential for long-term performance and appearance.
Tile installation — With waterproofing and substrate complete, we set tile with proper thin-set coverage, consistent spacing, and level alignment. Different tile types require different approaches — large format, mosaic, natural stone — and we adjust our methods accordingly.
Grouting and finishing — We use quality grout appropriate for your tile choice, properly mixed and applied. The shower is cleaned, inspected, and ready for use.

Waterproofing: The Difference Between 5 Years and 25 Years
Tile and grout are not waterproof. This surprises many homeowners who assume their shower is protected simply because it’s tiled. Without a proper waterproofing membrane behind the tile, water eventually finds its way through.
We are certified installers of industry-leading waterproofing systems including Schluter-KERDI and Laticrete HYDRO BAN. These systems have been tested and proven to prevent moisture intrusion when installed correctly.
What gets waterproofed in a properly built shower:
- All wall surfaces from floor to ceiling
- The shower pan and curb
- Inside and outside corners
- Niches and benches
- Around all penetrations (valves, showerheads, drains)
- The connection between the pan and drain assembly
Skipping any of these areas creates a weak point where water will eventually cause problems.
Tile Options for Showers
We install all types of tile in shower applications:
Porcelain — The most popular choice. Durable, low-maintenance, available in endless styles including wood-look and stone-look designs.
Ceramic — A budget-friendly option that performs well in showers when properly installed.
Natural stone — Marble, travertine, and slate create a luxury look. Requires sealing and more maintenance than porcelain.
Glass tile — Often used for accent walls, niches, or decorative bands. Requires specialized installation techniques.
Mosaic tile — Ideal for shower floors where smaller tiles conform to the slope toward the drain. Also popular for decorative features.
Large format tile — Tiles 12×24 and larger create a modern, seamless appearance with fewer grout lines. Requires flat substrates and careful installation.
Custom Shower Features
Beyond basic tile installation, we build custom features that make your shower more functional and beautiful:
Shower niches — Recessed shelving for shampoo, soap, and accessories. Fully waterproofed and tiled to match or accent your walls.

Shower benches — Built-in seating in corner, floating, or full-width designs. Essential for accessibility and convenience.

Linear drains — A modern alternative to center drains, allowing large-format tile on the floor with a single slope direction.
Curbless entry — Barrier-free design for accessibility, aging-in-place, or simply a clean modern look. Requires careful planning for proper drainage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most shower tile installations take 3 to 5 days. This includes surface preparation, waterproofing, tile setting, and grouting. Complex projects with custom features like niches, benches, or curbless entry may take longer. We provide a timeline estimate during your consultation based on your specific project.
Yes, always. Waterproofing is included in every shower we install — it’s not optional. We use industry-approved systems like Schluter-KERDI and Laticrete HYDRO BAN to create a continuous waterproof barrier behind your tile. This protects your home from moisture damage and ensures your shower lasts for decades.
Porcelain tile is the most popular choice for showers because it’s durable, water-resistant, and low-maintenance. Ceramic tile works well for walls on a tighter budget. Natural stone like marble or travertine creates a luxury look but requires sealing and more upkeep. For shower floors, smaller mosaic tiles are ideal because they conform to the slope toward the drain.
Shower tile installation costs vary based on size, tile selection, and custom features. A standard shower with quality porcelain tile and proper waterproofing typically ranges from $3,500 to $8,000. Custom showers with features like niches, benches, linear drains, or curbless entry will be higher. We provide detailed estimates after evaluating your space.
Yes. Curbless showers — also called zero-entry or barrier-free showers — are one of our specialties. They require careful planning for proper drainage and waterproofing, but the result is a clean, modern look that’s also accessible. Curbless showers are ideal for aging-in-place and ADA-compliant bathroom design.
